I have a great amount of respect and love for donkeys. I realized that there are shelters for dog/cats and horses, but very few for donkeys, especially in this part of the country. I found a few others that had this same love for and interest in donkeys, and together we started Holyland Donkey Haven. In no time at all our first donkey in need arrived. We all understand that a donkey's needs are not the same as a horse and that they need special care. We have a fabulous facility here and welcome anyone that wants to learn more about donkeys or that has love to share with the donkeys.                                                              WE ARE ALWAYS IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS

Holyland Donkey Haven is non-profit donkey rescue organization that takes in unwanted or abused and neglected donkeys. We at Holyland are dedicated to the well-being of all donkeys. We are a no-kill shelter, unless there is no quality of life for a donkey.

Donkeys are surrendered to us when their owners can no longer care for them because of a move, sickness, or the death of their caretaker. Some donkeys come to us as a result of being abused or neglected, and their owners are forced to give them up. Did you know that most abuse or neglect is from the lack of knowledge on the part of the owner? Then there are those that are old and no longer wanted.

All donkeys that we take in are kept in isolation until we deem them healthy enough, and we have assessed them thoroughly for any skills they may have, at which time they are then allowed to join the large herd. We work with the donkeys to brush up on skills needed to take better care of them.....such as lifting their hoofs for the farrier, leading and trailering.

Our mission is to educate all people, adults and children alike, on the care and proper maintenence of these wonderful and loving animals. Donkeys love children and children are attracted to donkeys. Remember, the outside of a donkey is great for the inside of a child, and we are all children.

Donkeys have many uses and are very adaptable.....anything you can do with a horse you can do with a donkey. Donkeys, like humans, need a purpose in life.
After we have rehabilitated a donkey with his or her health and rebuilt their trust in people, some donkeys are then trained to do extra work, such as riding or pulling a cart. This way they will have a purpose in life when they are adopted out. Donkeys are extremely intelligent and learn quickly.                         We also use them as therapy for special needs children and adults.
