I have a great respect and love for donkeys. I am aware that there are shelters for dogs, cats and horses, but very few for donkeys. This seems especially true in this part of the country. I found others that had this same love for and interest in donkeys, and together we started Holyland Donkey Haven. In no time, our first donkey in need arrived. We understand that a donkey's needs are not the same as a horse's and that they require a unique approach to their care. We have a fabulous facility here and welcome anyone interested in learning more about donkeys. We also welcome anyone willing to share their love and kindness with our donkeys.                                                  WE ARE ALWAYS IN NEED OF VOLUNTEERS!!

Holyland Donkey Haven is nonprofit donkey rescue organization that takes in unwanted, abused and neglected donkeys. At Holyland, we are dedicated to the well-being of all donkeys. We are a no-kill shelter, unless medical reasons dictate that humane euthanasia is the kindest alternative.

Donkeys are surrendered when their owners can no longer care for them. The reasons for surrender include: moving, sickness, or the death of their caretaker. Some donkeys come to us as a result of being abused or neglected, and their owners are forced to surrender them. Did you know that most abuse and neglect cases are the direct result of the owner's lack of knowledge?  Of course, there are also donkeys that become old and are no longer wanted.

All donkeys cared for by Holyland are screened for illness, have been assessed for the skills they may have, and are given adequate time to acclimate to their new environment before they join the large herd.  All donkeys are taught or refreshed on the basic skills needed to keep them in optimal health, including: lifting their hooves for the farrier, leading and trailering.

Our mission is to educate all people, adults and children alike, on the care and proper maintenance of these wonderful and loving animals. Donkeys love children and children are attracted to donkeys. Remember, the outside of a donkey is great for the inside of a child, and we are all children at one time.
